The monocarbene or bicarbene ligands with nickel give very stable complexes, thermally and chemically, particularly to oxidation. The claimed catalytic composition results from the contact of a nickel complex having at least one heterocyclic carbene ligand L; - at least one hydrocarbylaluminum halide; and optionally, an organic solvent. An Independent claim is also included for the dimerization, codimerization or oligomerization process using the composition.
