The oil sump (12) for a motor vehicle internal combustion engine has a partition to form a larger sump and a smaller one, which contains a fraction of the total oil necessary for the engine. The smaller amount of oil is used for warming up so that oil heating occurs rapidly, prior to use of the full oil capacity. The partition has a flow control valve to selectively connect the sump volumes.
