A method of searching for a gene encoding a protein specifically transporting into nuclear which comprises cloning each gene in a group of a large number of genes into an expression vector in such a manner that its gene product is expressed as a fused protein with a self-photoprotein to thereby construct a gene expression library, introducing this gene expression library into two cell groups to express the fused proteins, stimulating one of the cell groups with a chemical, etc., separating cells wherein the fused proteins are localized in the nucleus or the nuclei of such cells from both cell groups, and comparing the separated cells or nuclei to thereby search for a gene encoding a protein specifically transporting into the nucleus depending on the stimulus.
