PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system device for authenticating user, with which required user authentication can be performed without altering a server processing program in a job server. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a substitutive authentication mechanism 5 set on a network 2 for authenticating the user of terminal equipment 1 in place of a job server 3 and a password database 4 set in an area directly accessible from the substitutive authentication mechanism 5 for storing user authentication information such as user ID or password previously applied to the user of the terminal equipment 1 for utilizing the job server 3.
