PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recorder for security purposes which can record images with quality corresponding to the purpose of use, and enhancing the efficiency of memory use. SOLUTION: Cameras 2a and 2b are connected respectively to a changeover switch 4 in a recorder 3. The changeover switch 4 is connected to a decoder 5a in a video codec 5, and the video codec 5 is connected to a JPEG codec 6 dealing with the compression of signals or the like. The data compressed in the JPEG codec 6 are stored in a memory 11 and then are decompressed in the JPEG codec 6 before being output through an encoder 5b. The whole system is controlled by a controller 12, which can change the memory size depending on the purpose of use, and also correct the scaling factor according to the volume of the compressed image data. Therefore, it can record images with quality suitable for the purpose of use and effectively use the memory.
