The interspinal prosthesis is X-shaped and is made from material which has multidirectional flexibility. It has a narrow central area (3a, 3b) which fits against the spinal apophyses. In order to introduce the prosthesis, two of its arms (6, 7) are compressed towards each other. A U-shaped clip (11) is then fitted over them to hold them in position while the prosthesis is inserted, after which it is removed, allowing the arms to fit around the vertebrae. Independent claims are included for: (a) a method for making the prosthesis and (b) a tool for use in inserting it.
