A novel composition (A) comprising phytoene (I) (7,8,11,12,7',8',11',12'-octahydro- psi , psi '-carotene) in an amount effective to prevent damage caused by oxidation or exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, is new. An Independent claim is included for a method for preparing a composition containing (I), comprising: (a) incubating a carotenoid-producing organism in a medium under broad-spectrum light of intensity more than 10 W/m<2> (or out of doors under direct sunlight, from 80% shade to full sun), in presence of carotenoid synthesis inhibitor(s) (II); (b) culturing the organisms until (I) is obtained at a minimal content of 0.1-50 mg/l in the culture; and (c) separating the organisms from the culture. |
