PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely identify knocking by limiting effects of this kind of impediment or preventing the effects by this kind of the impediment in a method for identifying the knocking of an internal combustion engine and a type of identifying the knocking, when the detected or, according to circumstances, processed knocking signals exceed a reference level changing dependent on noise of the internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The increase in the reference level is limited as prescribed by taking account of a reference level band and/or taking account of gradient, or a criterion of changes in the reference level.
