PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device capable of performing discharge repeatedly and stably even when a lighting rate is changed and also capable of reducing power consumption while enhancing luminous efficiency with respect to the supplied power and its driving method. SOLUTION: In this display device, after first discharge is generated by detecting the lighting rate of discharge cells 14 to be simultaneously lighted with a sub-field lighting rate measuring device 8, controlling a scan driver 5 and a sustenance driver 6 with a sub-field processing unit 3 and changing timing for allowing a sustaining pulse to rise again in accordance with the detected lighting rate, second discharge is generated.
