PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing anα-keto acid ester from anα-hydroxy acid ester in high yield and high selectivity. SOLUTION: This method is to manufacture theα-keto acid ester by oxidizing anα-hydroxy acid ester in the presence of potassium permanganate and a hydrate of a metal mineral salt in an organic solvent immiscible with water.
