LIQUID CRYSTAL LIGHT VALVE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal light valve which has high light transmittance when the valve is not energized and which can degrade the light transmittance with good response by energization. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal light valve has a pair of electrode layers 16a and 16b which are arranged to face each other and at least one of which is light transparent and a liquid crystal layer 12 which is grasped between a pair of the electrode layers. The liquid crystal layer 12 contains nematic liquid crystal molecules Lq having negative dielectric anisotropy, dichromatic dyes Dy and additives for ion generation. The nematic liquid crystal molecules Lq and the dichromatic dyes Dy are perpendicularly oriented when voltage is not impressed across at least a pair of the electrode layers 16a and 16b and the nematic liquid crystal molecules Lq and the dichromatic dyes Dy are dynamically scattered when the voltage is impressed across a pair of the electrode layers 16a and 16b.
