A method of encoding a video signal representing a sequence of pictures, the method comprising encoding a first picture (or segment of a picture) of the sequence without reference to another picture of the sequence to produce a picture (I0) and encoding said first picture (or segment of a picture) with reference to another picture (I4) of the sequence to produce a corresponding temporally predicted picture (P4) or segment of a picture.
