PURPOSE: A micro-electrical mechanical structure(MEMS)-optical modulator and optical display system is provided to decrease the cost of optical damping or polarized illumination light and give high shading ratio to the display image. CONSTITUTION: A micro-electrical mechanical optical display system comprises an illumination source(50) providing illumination light; a collimating lens(58) receiving the illumination light and forming collimated illumination light; a converging micro-lens array(60); a micro-electrical mechanical optical modulator(70) including a planar substrate through which plural pixel apertures extend and plural micro-electrical mechanical actuators for supporting and selectively positioning plural micro-electrical mechanical shutters over the apertures; and a display screen(86) receiving the illumination light passing the micro-electrical mechanical optical modulator. The micro-electrical mechanical optical modulator is positioned such that the pixel apertures receive the illumination light from the converging micro-lens array. The illumination light passes the micro-electrical mechanical optical modulator selectively according to the selective positioning of the shutters.
