PURPOSE: To provide a valve timing control device for an internal combustion engine having improved response by performing correcting control corresponding to the characteristic of a hydraulic control valve actually mounted. CONSTITUTION: The valve timing control device comprises cams to be driven by a crankshaft 1a of the internal combustion engine 1 for opening/closing a suction valve and an exhaust valve, respectively, an actuator for changing a rotation phase of at least one of the cams to the crankshaft 1a, the hydraulic control valve 16 for applying hydraulic pressure to the actuator, and control means 17 for controlling a current value for an electromagnetic solenoid for the hydraulic control valve 16 and controlling the output hydraulic pressure of the hydraulic control valve 16 to control a valve timing. Current values which are applied to the electromagnetic solenoid for the control means 17 to operate the actuator are detected in the different operated conditions of the internal combustion engine 1 and the characteristic of the hydraulic control valve 16 is detected by a difference between the current values in the different operated conditions, and a controlled current value is determined.
