PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a measuring method and apparatus capable of measuring a golf ball 11 with ease and also with high accuracy. SOLUTION: A measuring apparatus for outer diameter 1 comprises a sensor 3, a moving means 5, a horizontally rotating means 7 and a vertically rotating means 9. The golf ball 11 is placed on the rotating means 9. A beam is emitted from a light-projecting part 13 to a light-receptive part 15. The ball 11 is moved up and down to a sensor face 17 by a first motor 19 of the moving means 5. Thus, the center of the ball 11 is positioned on the sensor face 17. The ball 11 is rotated with rotating of a second motor 27 of the rotating means 7 by a predetermined angle. Then, detects beam-shielded widths at each rotating angle are detected by the sensor 3. A measuring position is changed by a vertical rotation of the ball 11 with rotating of a third motor 31 of the rotating means 9.
