PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a boiler-driving efficiency by selecting a control mode in accordance with a load-change pattern. SOLUTION: In a method for controlling the number of boilers 10 provided with a control mechanism for continuously increasing/decreasing the burning rate, there is provided a mode-switching device for conducting switchover between a simultaneous proportional-control mode and the maximum-burning fixed control mode. In the case of a big load-change, the control mode is switched over by a mode-switching device to the simultaneous proportional- control mode, in order to increase/decrease simultaneously the burning rate of all the boilers 10 in firing at a signal from a number-of-boilers control-panel 18. In the case of small load-change, the control mode is switched to the maximum-burning fixed-control mode by a mode-switching device in order to fix the boiler 10 to the maximum-combustion fixed-control mode in order of start-up priority of the boilers. The number of the boilers is minimized for increasing/decreasing the burning rate on receiving a signal from the control panel 18, and the number of boilers for increasing/decreasing the burning rate is minimized.
