PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain high-speed developing and to stably form an image by rapidly and surely bringing liquid developer into contact with a photoreceptor, in a liquid developing device. SOLUTION: In the liquid developing device for developing an electrostatic latent image formed on an image supporting body (photoreceptor 6) by liquid developer, constituted by dispersing electrified toner particles in high insulation solvent, a developing area 43 for developing the electrostatic latent image is formed like a plane, and the device is provided with a developer carrying belt 3 for carrying the liquid developer to the developing area 43, and the developer carrying belt 3 is stretched between two belt holding members 17 and 16 arranged on the entrance and exit sides of the image supporting body 6; and at least one of the belt holding members is held so that a distance between the image supporting body 6 and the developer carrying belt 3 is variable. By making it a surface constitution of the developing area 43, the image stability and the developing speed are improved.
