PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix organic EL display device in which stray light beams of organic EL elements, especially the stray light beams having an angle with respect to the normal direction of a substrate and the stray light beams being propagated within the substrate surface are surely shut off and the occurrence of a pixel display defect caused by a malfunction of a TFT and the degradation in contrast are prevented. SOLUTION: A circuit section which includes a rear surface shield layer 10, an insulating film 11 and a thin film transistor 3 is formed on an insulation substrate 9. In an interlayer insulation film 15 formed on the circuit section, a wiring layer 16 which is connected to the source/drain electrodes of the transistor 3 and a light shielding body 4 which cuts through the films 15 and 11 and abuts onto the layer 10 are formed using a same material. An organic EL element having a light emitting region which is located at the place that is not overlapped with the circuit section is provided. The body 4 is three-dimensionally formed so that it surrounds approximately entire periphery of a light emitting region 5 of an organic EL element 7. Thus, the scattered and reflected stray light beams by the structure bodies such as the substrate 9, the films 11 and 15 and the stray light beams propagated inside an anode electrode 19 are prevented from being made incident on the circuit section which is constituted of the transistor 3 and capacitors.
