PURPOSE: To inexpensively avoid damage on the objective lens of an optical pickup or optical recording medium in focus searching. CONSTITUTION: The optical pickup is driven in a focus direction with a gradually increasing amplitude and when the optical pickup reaches within a range capable of focus servo, driving is stopped. Since the amplitude of driving gradually increases, even when the optical pickup is driven for several cycles on the initial stage of focus servo, the amplitude at such a time is still small. Then, since there are opportunities for the optical pickup to reach within the range capable of focus servo as many as a number of such cycles, possibility for the optical pickup to collide with the optical recording medium is low.
