PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst that exhibits high activity of hydrogenation and, especially, a high selectivity for the objective and a low rate of metal elution. SOLUTION: There is provided a hydrogenation catalyst prepared by allowing a molded active carbon support to carry at least Ru and Sn, wherein the sum of the frequencies in which the values resulting by dividing the quotients (Sn/Ru intensity ratio) resulting from the division of the Sn intensities at their respective measurement points by the Ru intensities at the same measurement points by the average of the Sn/Ru intensity ratios at all the measurement points is above 0.6 to 1.4 amounts to at least 75% of the total frequencies when the line of the longest diameter of a cross section formed when the support is cut vertically to its longer axis direction is subjected to a linear analysis with an X-ray microanalyzer (EPMA) under conditions in which the measurement span is 5 μm, and the diameter of electron beams is 5 μm.
