The invention relates to a position indictor for displaying the position of a piston (3) within a cylinder (1) as part of a piston/cylinder arrangement (1, 3) in a braking system. The provision of a Hall element for a hydraulic master cylinder, with the hall sensor mounted on the cylinder and a ring magnet on the piston is known. The aim of the invention is to describe a position indicator of simple construction and which provides the signal relating to the position of the brake pedal relatively rapidly. Said aim is achieved, whereby the Hall element of a Hall sensor (12) is placed in the cylinder wall (12) of the main cylinder and a magnetic region (9) is arranged within the piston/cylinder arrangement such that the Hall element reacts to the piston movement within the cylinder.
