Overlay network provision method e.g. for formation of virtual private communications network, uses selected tunnel connections between required network nodes for logic combining of partial networks

The method is used for provision of an overlay network (ON) which provides permanent connections between selected network nodes (NK1,..NK6) of a base network (BN), by determining the weightings of tunnel connections (TV1,..TV5) between each selected network node and the other selected nodes provided by the base network, for selection of the tunnel connections between separate partial networks for each of the selected nodes. The separate networks are then logically combined to provide a new network using the selected tunnel connections, the process repeated until the full overlay network is obtained.
