The actuator (1) comprises a piezoelectric motor (7) turning a ball screw drive unit (9). The actuator has a saddle (2) extending over the edge of the brake disc (5) carrying a fixed brake pad (4). The saddle is rigidly connected to the motor housing (6), which contains the stator (8) of the motor. The rotor (10) is mounted on the outside of a nut (14) which turns on a spindle which can move axially and is restrained from rotation. An extension on the spindle (15) moves a piston (13) holding the movable brake pad (3).
