PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic matter treating device which is free from the generation of such a state that the interior of a treatment tank is over-dried or the operation is changed to the operator absence mode under a maintained high moisture content condition and the treatment is deteriorated without normalization, even when no organic matter is loaded due to the absence of an operator and further, ensures the keeping of the moisture content at an appropriate level. SOLUTION: This organic matter treating device comprises a treatment tank which treats an organic matter such as garbage by decomposition, a lid body for opening/closing a loading aperture, a stirring means which stirs and mixes the organic matter loaded into the treatment tank and a carrier, a heating means which heats the interior of the treatment tank to a temperature suited for the microbial activity, a ventilation means for ventilating the interior of the treatment tank, a lid opening/closing detection means for detecting the opening/closing operation of the lid body, a moisture content detection means for detecting the internal moisture content of the treatment tank and a control means which controls the operation of the stirring means, heating means and ventilation means based on the moisture content and at the same time, sets the operation in the operator absence mode in which only the ventilation means is used when the moisture content is below the specified value, in case the lid body is not opened/closed for longer than a specified period.
