The deflector is fastened to a body side wall and has a deflector element. The element (26) is pivoted about a vertical axis against the force of a spring. It is fitted into an aperture (30) below the top edge (14) of the side wall (8), which is open towards the vehicle interior. The element is held by the spring in out-of-use position, and is moved by it into operating position, when the safety belt (4) is used. When not in use, the element is completely contained in the aperture.
