An image reproducing an object, has a focal plane located at a known distance (Z12) from the focal plane of previous image whose sharpness is modified by signal processing at a predetermined degree so that two images are equally sharpened. The focus deviation between object and the focal plane of previous image is estimated based on the modification degree and the distance.
