Coolant 19, 20, 22, 24 is applied near the weld surfaces 4, 12, while the components 2, 10 are brought together and moved so as to generate friction. Preferably the coolant is a refrigerant, carbon dioxide, argon or helium. The temperature can be controlled with the assistance of an induction heater 42. The surface is both heated and cooled during relative movement of the components, prior to formation of a weld interface. Heat is produced by relative rotational or transverse movement of the components. Both the apparatus and method of joining titanium to titanium aluminide are disclosed.
