PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic connecting device of a wire electrode and an automatic connecting method therefor capable of connecting the wire electrode at a high speed. SOLUTION: At least one of factors having influence on a success rate of connection such as the thickness t of a work object is set as a parameter, and when the thickness t of the work object is smaller than a prescribed value T, a first mode is selected for connecting the wire electrode in a relatively short time by simplifying operation of plural devices operating at connecting time as much as possible or inserting the wire electrode at a high speed into an inserting hole formed in the work object. In this case, operation for lowering a guide pipe up to an upper side guide, operation for ejecting liquid and operation for sending out the wire electrode at a high speed almost simultaneously make progress. As a result, connecting time can be shortened by sending out the wire electrode at a high speed without reducing the success rate of automatic connecting operation. When the thickness t of the work object is larger than the prescribed value T, a second mode is selected for basically successively operating the plural devices operating when connecting the wire electrode or sending out the wire electrode at a lower speed than the first mode so that the wire electrode is surely connected.
