<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a following travel device, by which the driver's car can be decelerated properly so that a driver feels no anxiety when a preceding vehicle decelerates abruptly. SOLUTION: On the basis of the output from a vehicle-to-vehicle distance sensor 1 and a wheel speed sensor 2, ECU 5(Electronic Control Unit) computes a vehicle-to-vehicle time, which is a required time for the driver's car to reach the current position of the preceding vehicle, and controls an electronic throttle 8 and a brake actuator 9 to keep the computed vehicle-to-vehicle time equal to a prescribed target vehicle-to-vehicle time. If the deceleration of the preceding vehicle, computed from the output from the vehicle-to-vehicle distance sensor 1 and the wheel speed sensor 2, is high enough to surpasses a first specified value, which allows the preceding vehicle to quickly gain on the driver's vehicle, a prescribed correction value is added to the target vehicle-to-vehicle time to obtain an corrected vehicle-to-vehicle time. Then ECU 5 controls the electronic throttle and other units to achieve the corrected vehicle-to-vehicle time as the target.</p> |
