Partial desalination of water, especially drinking water, uses a mixture of weakly acid cation exchangers and strongly basic anion exchangers, which are regenerated and rinsed with water before re-use. The content of organic carbon compounds is also reduced during desalination and the ion exchangers are regenerated discontinuously.
