The control system (50) for a clutch (10) whose slip is regulated uses a control parameter, e.g. clutch pressure, which is compared with a desired value set by a selector (68), depending on a number of functional parameters. A diagnostic system (70) will only accept settings if the derivative of the characteristic friction/slip curve is above a predetermined value. An Independent claim is included for a process for operating a clutch using the system.
