To increase the grip of a roller (W), a strip (B) is wound around it with an outer layer (11) which is rough to give a friction grip, bonded to an inner layer (12). The inner layer, or the bond (V) between it and the outer layer, has a high stiffness and especially across the longitudinal extension of the strip, to prevent corrugations under normal roller loading which would not be permissible, The strip winding around a roller, to give a friction grip cladding, has an inner layer which is a metal layer which is ferromagnetic or can be ferromagnetized. The inner layer, which can be can be a metal foil, has a thickness of 0.2-1.0 mm and preferably 0.4 mm. The inner layer can be based on a plastics material, or can be laminated with a plastics on the upper and/or lower surfaces. An Independent claim is included for a roller with a wound friction grip cladding strip, where the forces experienced at the edges (14',14) on moving a web do not displace the wound cladding strip across its longitudinal line. Preferred Features: The outer layer is extruded on to the inner layer. The inner layer can be produced separately, with an adhesive bond between it and the outer layer being formed as the strip is wound around the roller. The inner layer can cover the roller as a slitted sleeve, or is wound in a spiral around the roller. An additional metal foil layer can be inserted between a metal foil inner layer and the outer layer, with a temporary bond between the intermediate and inner layers.
