Heating element comprises a one-piece base plate (2); a heating section (5) supporting a heating spiral (3); and a contact section (6) supporting contacts (4). A thermal barrier (7) is arranged between the heating section and the contact section to limit heat flow between both sections. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of a heating element. Preferred Features: The thermal barrier is formed by the heating spiral placed in the boundary region between both sections as a terminating line. The heating spiral is formed as a conducting pathway applied in a meander-like manner to the heating section. The conducting pathway is imprinted onto the base plate. The base plate is a strip of ceramic, especially Al2O3, having a length of less than 50 mm and a width of less than 10 mm.
