PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for testing data transmission paths in an exchange are provided to confirm each switching path of an ATM exchange using the cell data transmitted between processors. CONSTITUTION: A control part sets or appoints a test path among a plurality of data transmission paths. Also the control part sets or determines a test method(S200). Then the control part transmits a test start signal to a relevant subscriber interface unit. After receiving a loopback ready ACK(Acknowledge) signal from the subscriber interface unit(S210), the control part creates and outputs a test IPC(Inter Processor Communication) cell signal(S220). At this moment, the control part notifies an ALS(ATM Local Switch), an ACS(ATM Central Switch) and a remote ALS about the test path and the test method. The ALS confirms whether a routing value supplied from the control part is for a unit test, a local test or a global test(S230). In case that the provided routing value is for the unit test, the ALS executes switching so that the test IPC cell signal outputted from the control part can be supplied to the appointed subscriber interface unit(S240). The test IPC cell signal is looped back to the control part by the switching of the ALS(S290). The control part analyzes the returned test IPC cell signal and judges whether the associated path is normal.
