A color cathode ray tube (20) is disclosed that includes a glass faceplate (24) having on its inner surface (26) a centrally disposed, rectangular screen (28). On each of opposed sides of the screen (28) is a plurality of discrete ceramic mask support segments (48) to which is secured a tensed foil shadow mask (50). A process for fabrication is also disclosed.
