Methods for inhibiting viral infection are disclosed comprising adminstering a (5-aryl-1,2,4-thiadiazol)-3-yl thiourea derivative or (5-aryl-1,2,4-thiadiazol)-3-yl urea derivative of the formula:wherein X is oxygen or sulfur, R is hydrogen or alkyl having from 1-3 carbons, n is 1-4, R1 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, chloro, bromo or fluoro, oxychloro, alkoxy having the formula -O(CH2)yCH3 wherein y is from 1 to 6, or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt or prodrug thereof.
