Use of a surface active phospholipid in the manufacture of a powder medicament for the treatment of wet lung in mammals. Wet lung is a condition in which there is slow and incomplete clearance of lung fluid and may occur in respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) including infant respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is a pulmonary complication which may follow a variety of disorders including sepsis, trauma and shock. The medicament is preferably in the form of a dry, finely-divided solid which is a blend of a first component consisting of one or more phosphatidyl cholines and a second component which is one or more of phosphatidyl glycerols, phosphatidyl ethanolamines, phosphatidyl serines, phosphatidyl inositols and chlorestyl palmitate, preferably a blend of phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl glycerol. Preferably the phosphatidyl choline is dipalmitoylphosphatidyl choline. The SAPLs may be prepared synthetically and the phosphatidyl choline, dipalmitoylphosphatidyl choline and/or phosphatidyl glycerol may comprise the dextro-rotatory form. |
