PURPOSE: A rope brake for an elevator is provided to overcome the instantaneous momentum when a rope of an elevator is braked and to promptly brake the abnormal movement of the rope. CONSTITUTION: Protruded portions(11a) are formed on both ends of housings(11). The housings spaces apart from each other. A power transmitting unit(21) consists of a drive gear(27) interlocking with a motor(23) and a driven gear(29) interlocked by the drive gear. The driven gear drives a crank shaft(35) and embeds a rotor including a backward rotation preventing ratchet. An operation starting unit(31) consists of a detonation lever(34) having a latch(34a) detonated by a solenoid valve(33), the crank shaft connected to both ends of a cam rotation shaft(36a) having an eccentric cam(36), and a spring support bar fixing shaft(38a). A fixing plate(43) is installed aside the housing protrusions. According to the firm structure of the housings and fixing plate, the strong load applied to the fixing plate is supported. Since an elevator rope is braked by the instantaneous rebounding force of the spring, the rope is braked promptly.
