PURPOSE: An abbreviated dialing expansion unit for a general telephone and a method for controlling the same are provided to perform a dialing by storing a telephone number separately from a general telephone and reading the telephone number by an abbreviated dial. CONSTITUTION: A line matching unit(11) matches an impedance with a main wire. A memory unit(14) stores a telephone number. A DTMF tone transmitting unit(15) receives a telephone number and generates the corresponding DTMF signal. A DTMF tone receiving unit(12) converts a DTMF signal being inputted in the main wire into the corresponding number. A main wire status detecting unit(18) detects a status of the main wire. A keyboard control unit(16) codes a key value of a keyboard unit(17). The keyboard unit(17) has a plurality of keys. A main control unit(13) controls each unit and stores a telephone number being inputted from the DTMF tone receiving unit(12) in the memory unit(14), reads the telephone number stored in the memory unit(14) in accordance with a key value being inputted from the keyboard control unit(16), outputs the telephone number to the DTMF tone transmitting unit(15), and outputs a DTMF tone signal to a telephone line in accordance with the telephone number.
