PURPOSE: Provided is a novel manufacturing method of 2-mercaptopyridine N-oxide derivative which is a major intermediate in manufacturing pyrithione based antibiotics or its salt. CONSTITUTION: The novel manufacturing method of 2-mercaptopyridine N-oxide is characterized by reacting, as a starting material, pyridine N-oxide with S8 molecule to introduce sulfur functional group(-SH, SNa, -SK) in the presence of base catalyst and organic solvent, at room temperature(20 deg.C) to 100 deg.C, preferably 30-80 deg.C. In the formula(1), M represents alkaline metal, such as sodium and potassium, or hydrogen molecule.
