A cylindrical tube (3) is held on the installation part by pressing in a second end into the installation part. A first end protrudes from a first end of the installation part. Heat generation elements (4,5) are accommodated in the section of the tube near to the first end to generate heat when excited. A central shaft (6) with a first end is connected electrically with the heat generation elements in the tube and a second end protrudes into the installation part from the second end of the tube. The glow plug has a cylindrical installation part (2), and an assembly thread section (21) with an outside diameter of not more than 8 millimeters which is designed for the assembly on the engine on the outside peripheral surface of the installation part.
