A known electromagnetic actuator comprises two electromagnets arranged opposite each other, one armature moving forwards and backwards between the electromagnets counter to the force of two springs working against each other, in addition to regulating means for adjusting the rest position of the armature. One disadvantage of such a device is that after a certain amount of working hours, it may be necessary to re-adjust the precise pretensioning of the springs determining the rest position. According to the inventive method, it is possible to obtain an optimal and durable regulation of the pretensioning of the springs for the operation of the actuator. This is achieved by compressing the springs as often as possible in a repetitive compression cycle until the respective energy stored therein as a result of the compression thereof is no longer different from or only slightly different from the energy stored in the respective spring in a prior compression cycle and by exclusively adjusting the pretension of the springs thereafter. The invention also relates to the production of an electromagnetic actuator for controlling gas exchange in an internal combustion engine.
