The apparatus includes a rotary powered vacuum pump. The unit is an attachment (1) for a conventional electrical kitchen appliance, and especially a rod mixer or hand stirrer. A shaft coupling (7) is fitted to the appliance drive shaft to operate the vacuum pump (17). The vacuum pump is a vane pump, with a rotor (10), and radial projecting blades (11) against the inner wall of a graphite ring (16).
