The invention relates to an agent which inactivates pathogens and to the use thereof. Said agent contains an element that bonds with the nucleic acids of the pathogens and a conjugate, which destroys nucleic acid. The conjugate is produced from a metal-chelate complex, in which the metal can change between at least two levels of oxidation. The agent can in particular be used in physiological liquids such as blood or blood components for inactivating viruses.
