Method in which involves common movement of a number of print modules (111-114) in a direction orthogonal to the mail transport direction using a printer carriage. During printing the mail item is held fixed with printing over several lines taking place including at least one secure frank printing module. The print modules can be operated with different ink colors including authorized special ink for franking the mail value. An Independent claim is made for a printer arrangement for printing mixed mail items with a print module arrangement moved by a print carriage (11). A sprung tensioning mechanism ensures that the postal items are held secure during transport and printing phases. A microprocessor is used to control item movement and printing.
