The invention relates to a starting device for internal combustion engines, comprising a starter motor (11) and an output shaft (15) which cooperates with a starter pinion (17) which is mounted in such a way that it is axially displaceable, said pinion engaging with a crown gear of the internal combustion engine at the beginning of each start process and advancing as far as a stop (20) . When engaged, the pinion is maintained by a controllable rear track element (28). In order to avoid the need for a controllable actuator for locking and unlocking said rear track element (28), the latter (28) is provided with a centrifugally controlled unlocking system (29, 30, 33).
