The invention relates to a method for recording, organizing, processing, transmitting and archiving one-dimensional and multi-dimensional digital data of any type (e.g. still or moving image data). The inventive method combines a reversible (lossless) compression with the use of a processing module, which increases the attainable compression rates without changing relevant components of the signal or, alternatively, a module is used for adaptively selecting an appropriate quantization parameter for an optimal lossy (irreversible) compression and carries out a structured buffering of the input data with priority-controlled processing. The inventive method is for use, among other things, in the fields of telemedicine, digital radiological image processing, image archiving, video surveillance, and video recording.
