LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY AND ITS MANUFACTURING METHOD

A liquid crystal display for displaying an image by changing the alignment of the liquid crystal layer sandwiched between two substrates from a spray alignment to a bent alignment. When a voltage below a threshold is applied to the liquid crystal layer, this display is so adjusted that the region in which liquid crystal molecules horizontal to the substrate plane are distributed unevenly to one of the substrates and the region in which those is present biasedly to the other are equally present. In such a liquid crystal display, the value of the pretilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules near one substrate is different from that of the liquid crystal molecules near the other, and bent transition nuclear inducing means is provided at least to one of the substrates. As a method for making the pretilt angles different from each other, a method in which alignment films made of the same material are formed, and then only one of the substrates is subjected to alignment or the condition of alignment of one of the substrates is different from that of the other.
