摘要 The present invention relates to a method of manufacturating thermally expanded core (TEC) optical fibres and, in particular, a method of manufacturing TEC optical fibres by use of a conveyor mechanism. One aspect of the present invention provides a method of manufacturing thermally expanded core (TEC) optical fibres, the fibre comprising a glass portion for transmission of light, and a surrounding polymer coating for protection of the glass portion, the glass portion comprising a central core of relatively higher refractive index glass surrounded by a cladding of relatively lower refractive index glass, the method comprising the steps of: i) unreeling the fibre and cleaving the fibre into predefined lengths, ii) attaching each length of fibre to a continuous transverse conveyor mechanism, the transverse conveyer mechanism arranged to transfer a TEC region of the fibre through a through-feed heater device and then out of the through-feed heater, iii) applying a known axial force to the TEC region of the fibre, iv) transferring the TEC region through the through-feed heater and thereby locally heating the TEC region, causing expansion of the core in this region and hence increasing the mode field diameter of the fibre in this region, v) transferring the TEC region out of the through-feed heater, allowing the TEC region to cool the steps being executed continuously such that the time interval over which each TEC region is transferred through the through-feed heater is substantially larger than the time interval between the unreeling and cleaving of successive fibres, thereby enabling the manufacture of high volumes of TEC fibres, yet permitting the expansion of the core during heating to be relatively slow and controlled.
