<p>Disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition comprising isolated total glycosides of dangshen. The isolated total glycosides of dangshen, extracted from dangshen herbs, are useful in a method for enhancing memory acquisition, retention and/or retrieval in a human subject and are useful for enhancing or protecting against memory impairment caused by age or by the memory-impairing effects of ethanol or other drugs or medications. Also disclosed is an extract of dangshen prepared by steps including extracting dangshen with water to produce an aqueous filtrate of an extract of dangshen containing total glycosides of dangshen; adding the aqueous filtrate to a column filled with a macro-reticular resin which selectively binds the total glycosides of dangshen; freeing the total glycosides of dangshen from the macro-reticular resin by eluting the total glycosides of dangshen from the column with an alcohol; and separating the total glycosides of dangshen from the alcohol.</p> |
